The Indian film Madgaon Express has generated much interest because it is Kunal Khemu’s directorial debut on a full-length feature film. It was produced by the popular Khans of Bollywood Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani at their production house called Excel. There are a total of 24 chapters in the film where each chapter is covered by a voiceover or song. The location of this film Madgaon is situated in Goa which is India’s most favorite section. Goa is famous because of its stunning coastline and tropical climate, colonies present there and its beautiful people makes Goa an ideal location for shooting. The filmmakers were able to beautifully capture various Goan landscapes such as its tranquil beaches, busy market places and green paddy fields. In the interview many characters described how Goan beauty is dreamy and its places are enriching. Throughout the filming locations were suitable to the plot, creating the memorable experience that later transformed many of the actors. Local fests, Goan music and local food were authentically used in the film.

Divyenndu Sharma as Dhanush ‘Dodo’ Sawant – Divyenndu, an actor blessed with multi-dimensional performances took the character of Dodo, an ambitious dreamer who’s never out of hope despite the hurdles life throws at him.
Pratik Gandhi as Pratik ‘Pinku’ Garodia – Pinku, who is the sensible and funny member of the three when everyone else goes out of control, is up to the direction Praatik, who became popular for portraying the character of Harshad Mehta in. Scam 1992.
Avinash Tiwary as Ayush Gupta – Avinash, who generally plays hard-hitting roles, steps into the shoes of Ayush, a more practical and realistic character who often plays the balancing act in the group.
Nora Fatehi as Tasha Tehreen – Another beauty who charms the audience with her screen presence is Nora who essays the character of Tasha, a beautiful and captivating woman who is an important character in the travels of the friends.
Upendra Limaye as Mendoza Don – Upendra, a reputed artist of Marathi films has successfully played his character Mendoza whose incompetency gets the friends in trouble.
Chhaya Kadam as Kanchan Kombdi – Chhaya who is often seen stealing the show with her fierce roles as Kanchan, brings in a subtle touch of love and intelligence to the story.
Plot
The plot of “Madgaon Express” introduces Dodo, Pinku and Ayush who proficiently are childhood friends and are waiting to complete their board exams so that they can visit Goa. But because their parents are not on board as well as life throwing unplanned circumstances in their way, the trip never materializes. Time flies by and the three of them who are now in their mid twenties plan a trip of their dreams after they graduate and finally go to Goa. Eager to finally wear long-awaited childhood dreams, they purchase the tickets of Madgaon express train.
But even before the train arrives, one bizarre incident occurs when Pinku mistakenly takes his bag with a man who took this very identical bag without noticing and it turns out to be his bag. In this bag there is large quantity of money, a revolver, and some keys to a hotel room. Not against the odds however, the friends manage to get on the train and really begin the adventure. When they reach there, they hail a cab and the first place where they go is the beach in order to quite unexpectedly meet a drug dealer who offers them “magic” pills. The embracing friends go wild, party and sleep in a hotel with female prostitutes. As it is usual, the next day Dodo, who invited the prostitutes, is berated by Ayush. Dodo admits that he had found a key to a strange man’s room and he still had it.
The story intensifies as the friends get caught in actuality with local gangs, the enigmatic Mendoza Don, and the ambitious Tasha Tehreen, all of whom seem to have something hidden about themselves. In the face of such trials and tribulations, they are slowly reminded of the essence of their friendship and also of the friendship itself.
Themes
The screenwriters of ‘Madgaon Express’ do not shy away from dramatizing friendship, aspiration and socio-political issues. The movie depicts how childhood expectations and ambitions are often at odds with the reality growing up brings about. It depicts a keen interest in and commitment to dream above and beyond that which is developed in the course of one’s maturation. The mix of plots, laughter, sense of loss and all those strange attributes have made it commanding for the audience of any age group.
The film also speaks about the healing power of travel. Goa, with all its easy going spirit and culture embodies all that the characters desire, liberating them. The quest to Goa turns out to be an inner quest where the friends battle their fears, insecurities and unaccomplished aims.
Songs
The songs are composed of a fusion of melodies and new age tunes with the main composers being Ankur Tewari, Shaarib-Toshi, Kunal Khemu, Sagar Desai, Sameer Uddin and Ajay-Atul. The songs have been specially designed to enhance the story and feel of the film.
“Gaon Ki Galiyan”: this song features the friends’ childhood and evokes nostalgia of simpler times which the friends share together. Great song!
“Dil Dhadakne Do”: a song filled with energy like never before; the sense of anticipation of going on a long-awaited trip is reflected in the song.
“Raat Ke Saaye”: one of the sad songs from the friends’ travel that probably touches the low and high points of the saga. Such a beautiful composition.
“Goa Calling”: catching song which portrays the essence of Goa; the beats are so energetic and free there is no point to try and hold still.
“Yaariyaan”: moving friendship song which perfectly describes the depth of relationships and the strength of dreams.
